Craig in Area51 (Rachel Nevada) | date: 26/09/2005 | time: 18.58
Well we drove for 2.5 hours from Las Vegas up to Rachel Nevada, some of the most spectacular scenery ever, a road that goes off in to the distance for miles and nothing else but desert and mountains, wow.

We stopped at the Little Aleinn in Rachel, which is a lovely little place, with fantastic photos on the walls, ace food and even better conversation. Thanks to Pat and Laura for the hospitality whilst we were there and also to Jim and Pat (Desert Rats), maybe next time we will catch some coyote.

We drove down Area 51 road to the front door (or as far as you can go without getting arrested or shot) and saw the security guards in their trucks on the hillside watching us. Then just a gentle 2.5 hour drive across the ET Highway to Tonopah.

Bright Lights, big city.

Well been here for 3 days now, 5 hour drive up from Bakersfield. Beautiful rugged scenery on the way over, sights that you cant imagine, roads that disappear in to the distance and very very hot (90's).

Vegas, big, loud and brash. Went to the Star Trek Experience, brilliant and Quarks bar where they replicate your food and serve up a goldfish bowl filled with 10oz of rum and punch (cant taste the punch, but oh my the rum) with dry ice on the top, cracking (legs dont fail me now). The shows are very in character here with a borg walking around and some Klingons (plus saddo tourists dressed in trekkie outfits, geeks).

Went to Zoe's wedding yesterday, she looked beautiful and Dean looked very dapper. Very nice ceremony.

Off to wander round some more of the sights before heading on to Rachel Nevada, Area51 and the Little Aleinn. If you dont hear from us, then we have been abducted by Aliens (not illegal ones either).

Update you all later on (if we survive the encounter).

You cant hear it, but I am sat here whistling the Close Encounters tune.

Hi to the folks with the deprivated sleep patterns, Meeoww.

Ok, came from San Simeon State Park camping, heard the sea and Coyote howling. Warnings about Mountain Lions and Spiders, Hooooooo.

Then we drove to Solvang which is a pretty little danish Village in California, very small, but very pretty.

Nice food, friendly people and lovely warm sun (80 Degrees).

Off to Bakersfield now for another nights camping, this will be the 5th so far, woo hoo hardened veterans of camping now.

ps. we stood today on the San Andreas fault line at a little Mission founded in 1727. Views of the valley across from the Sierra mountains to the next set (no idea what they are called)- but a flat plain with about a 6-8 foot difference in height at the fault line.
Sat currently in a lovely little cafe in Watsonville (hispanic area) using free internet access - and just off back to the campground to cook some food.

Okay, so where do we start, lets see.

Left San Francisco on Thu 15th after eventually picking up the hire car, even though National have had 8 months to get it right, they still manage to balls it up.

Drove to McAlpine's campground in San Juan, oh my makes campgrounds in the UK look lovely (no toilet soap, shower curtains from the Bates Motel and Glastonbury bogs). Cant wait to leave there.

San Juan is fantastic tho, picture postcard town. Went to the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz (Freaky), then along the Santa Cruz Boardwalk (fans of the Lost Boys movie will recognise this place).

Saw a Dutch jazz band play in the street and we were then serenaded at a Mexican Restaurant (how cool is that).

Tomorrow (18th Sept) we start off down Highway 1 to the next destination.

Sorry England 71 Degrees and sunny here, wonderful place and a nice big petrol guzzling beasty (V8 4.3L engine), just filled up at 1.80GBP per Gallon (yee haa).

Will write soon, although for a country this size Internet Cafes are few and far between.

Well, last full day in SFO. Visited lots of the major sights - shopping centres, Fishermans Wharfe(tacky), Alcatraz, cable car rides, Cheesecake factory(yummy) - having seen the roads here should be fun picking up the hire car and driving out of this mad place. That'll be Craig doing the driving!!! and me navigating/with eyes closed that is. Sat having a coffee at the moment, and just off to wander back towards the hotel and see some last bits - not overly impressed tho - just another big city with the usual shops, streets and loads of hills - seeking little town america next for some real fun times! Hi to Mum & Dad, we are nice & chilled and eating loads!

Well, unfortunately Hurricane Katrina has scuppered our plans to visit New Orleans, Biloxi and the Gulf coastline - it sounds pretty scary out there at the moment with predictions of needing 4-6 months before some areas become even liveable again.

So - change of plans for the last leg of the trip. We are now hoping to cut across Tennessee, Alabama(topside), into Georgia and then dropping down into Florida. So last minute replanning done - off to celebrate Craig's last day with a bottle of champagne(cheers Martyn!!)

So see you all later on in December.

We had the BBQ at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Despite the terrible weather in the morning, things did improve a little over the afternoon, and certainly did not stop us. Lots of good food, good company and very silly costumes. So a big thanks to everyone who came along. With 27 days left until the adventure begins, we are getting a teeny bit excited now....
